Spanish coach Guillermo Abascal has left his position as head coach of Moscow’s Spartak, the club’s press service announced. «The leadership of the 'red and whites' has made the decision to dismiss Guillermo Abascal from his position as head coach of Spartak. We thank Guillermo for the work he has done at our club and wish him luck in his future career», - the statement said. Assistant coach Vladimir Sliskovich will prepare the team for the return match against Zenit in the Russian Cup semi-final on April 17. Earlier, sources familiar with the situation told RBC Sport about the decision to dismiss Abascal.

In January, Spartak’s general director Oleg Malyshev said in an interview with RBC Sport that fans, the club, and the board of directors were dissatisfied with the team’s performance this season under Abascal’s leadership. He clarified that the coach was tasked with improving the situation. In the spring part of the season, Spartak has only achieved two victories, and in the last match on April 13, they lost to Sochi, who is in last place, with a score of 0−1. Spartak is currently in sixth place in the Russian Premier League.

Abascal, who took over as head coach of Spartak in 2020, has faced criticism for the team’s inconsistent performance and lack of results. The decision to part ways with the Spanish coach comes as Spartak aims to improve its position in the league and achieve better results in upcoming matches. The club will now begin the search for a new head coach to lead the team in the remainder of the season and beyond.
