North Korea conducted tests of 240-millimeter multiple rocket launch systems (MRLS) launched from a new defense facility, reported the Central Telegraph Agency of Korea (CTAK). The country’s leader Kim Jong Un was present during the drills. He praised the test launch as «very satisfactory» and noted that the new systems «will contribute to strategic changes in strengthening the artillery forces of the country’s army». In mid-March, North Korea conducted training exercises with super-large caliber 600 mm MRLS. The rockets successfully hit simulated targets. At that time, Kim Jong Un stated that the number of super-large caliber MRLS batteries in the North Korean army should be increased.

The latest tests come amid heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula, with North Korea recently firing several short-range missiles into the sea. The United States and South Korea have expressed concern over North Korea’s military activities, urging the country to refrain from provocations and engage in dialogue to achieve denuclearization. The tests of the MRLS systems are seen as a demonstration of North Korea’s military capabilities and a show of force in response to joint military exercises conducted by the US and South Korea.

North Korea’s development of advanced missile systems has been a point of contention in international relations, with the country facing sanctions from the United Nations for its nuclear and missile programs. Despite diplomatic efforts to denuclearize the Korean peninsula, North Korea has continued to conduct missile tests, raising concerns about the stability of the region. The tests of the MRLS systems indicate North Korea’s commitment to enhancing its military capabilities and maintaining a strong defense posture in the face of perceived threats from foreign powers.
