Lieutenant Colonel of the Federal Penitentiary Service in the Tyumen region has been sentenced to three years in prison for evading service in the military operation zone in Ukraine. This was reported by 72.ru. According to the publication, in October 2022, a lieutenant colonel named Alexander was mobilized and was supposed to report to a military unit in the Donetsk People’s Republic. By the end of October 2023, the Central Military District headquarters announced that the man had not shown up. Military enlistment office officials began searching for him. On October 30, Alexander went to the military enlistment office, where he was instructed to report to the commandant’s office of the Tyumen garrison. He was ordered to go to the military operation zone, but he did not comply.

It later emerged that Alexander had sought medical help. Doctors determined that he did not require emergency or urgent care and recommended outpatient treatment, which did not prevent him from serving in the military. Alexander was at home with his family undergoing treatment. He was convicted under the article on unauthorized leaving of a unit or place of service due to failure to report without valid reasons (Article 337 of the Criminal Code). The court sentenced him to three years in a general regime colony. Following the start of the military operation in Ukraine, Russians have been repeatedly prosecuted for evading service. For example, in mid-April, Vitaliy Utin, who was mobilized in the fall of 2022 in the Yaroslavl region, was sentenced to five and a half years in prison for failing to report to his unit.

Upon mobilization, Utin was classified as «B»: he was deemed partially fit due to an eye condition — acute central serous chorioretinopathy. He was sent for surgery at the Kirov Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg, but the treatment did not help, and he remained at home for more than six months. At the advice of his lawyer, Utin reported to his unit, after which a criminal case was opened against him.
