Head of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Denis Pushilin has signed a decree abolishing the republic’s Ministry of Information, according to a statement on the regional leader’s website. The decree states, «I decree: to liquidate (abolish) the Ministry of Information of the DPR», - with the completion of the agency’s liquidation required by August 1.

Earlier, Pushilin dismissed the first deputy head of the administration of the regional leader, Alexander Kostomarov, from his position. Kostomarov was relieved of his duties as of April 27, 2024, although the reason for his dismissal was not specified in the decree. Alexander Kostomarov had held the position of first deputy head since June 2022.

The decision to abolish the Ministry of Information comes amidst a period of change within the DPR, with Pushilin taking steps to restructure the administration and streamline government functions. The move may signal a shift in the republic’s approach to information dissemination and management, although the specific implications of the decision remain to be seen.

The DPR, a self-proclaimed state in eastern Ukraine, has been the site of ongoing conflict since 2014, when pro-Russian separatists declared independence from Ukraine. The region has faced political instability and economic challenges, with various factions vying for control and influence. Pushilin’s recent actions may be part of broader efforts to consolidate power and assert authority within the republic.
